Todo veículo com motor a combustão, seja ele movido a gasolina, etanol, flex ou diesel tem um filtro de combustível. Isso porque os combustíveis contêm uma grande quantidade de contaminantes, vindos do transporte, armazenagem e também se formam no próprio tanque. É comum encontrar ferrugem, água, e outros resíduos misturados ao combustível. O responsável por não deixar que estes contaminantes entrem na câmara de combustão é o filtro do combustível, ele evita que esta sujeira chegue aos pequenos orifícios do carburador, ou sistema de injeção eletrônica.
